What Is an ENG Test?

An Electronystagmography (ENG) test is performed to measure the movement of your eyes to determine the functioning of your two cranial nerves (acoustic or vestibulocochlear nerve and oculomotor nerve) in your brain. The acoustic nerve connects the inner ear and the brain, thus controlling balance and hearing. The oculomotor nerve connects the brain to the eye muscles, being responsible for the movement of your eyes.

When Do You Need an ENG Test?

We may order an ENG test if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Vertigo (a false sense of spinning that can cause dizziness)
  • Balance problems
  • Severe or persistent dizziness
  • Unexplained hearing loss

An ENG is also required to rule out the following conditions:

  • Any suspected lesions in your inner ear
  • Acoustic Neuroma (a benign tumor on the acoustic nerve)
  • Labyrinthitis (inner ear inflammation)
  • Usher Syndrome (inherited disorder affecting balance, vision, and hearing)
  • Meniere’s Disease (an inner ear disorder that causes balance problems and hearing loss)
